Presentation

Approach of the main aspects related to transportation facilities and development of skills in geotechnics of transport infrastructures, to support the understanding and solution of geotechnical problems associated with the design and construction of this type of engineering works.

Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

Create skills in geotechnics in the various aspects related to transport infrastructures, especially those necessary for the development of the different phases of this type of infrastructure.
Students should:
Know the methodologies used in the preparation of the design, implementation and control of construction and monitoring of works either in the construction phase or in the operation phase;
Understand the interaction between the various factors involved in the processes, conducting research autonomously in order to solve new situations;
Apply the acquired knowledge to new situations and in multidisciplinary contexts;
Critically analyse the projects, through the previously acquired knowledge;
Propose measures, studies and solutions to be implemented in each situation and evaluate the implications of implementing the solutions studied;
Communicate scientific ideas and knowledge, problems and solutions coherently and logically organized for specialists or non-specialists.

Contents

Introduction: Framework of the role of Geotechnics in Transport Infrastructures, namely, in the different phases of the life cycle of this type of undertaking, from design, construction and operation.
Geology and Geotechnics in Transport Infrastructures: Tasks and objectives of geological and geotechnical study, in the various phases of construction projects (Feasibility study of the project; Preliminary study; Preliminary design; Final design) and in conservation projects; Geotechnical aspects related to the construction of Transport Infrastructures; Geotechnical follow-up and quality control of works in the construction phase and collaboration in the interpretation of the results of the observation of the geotechnical behaviour of the project in the operation phase.
Introduction to the role of contract specifications, as regulatory documents, both for the preparation of the design and for the construction of the undertaking, for the guarantee and control of the quality of the works.

Teaching Methods

Face-to-face and distance learning (blended learning). Theoretical and theoretical-practical face-to-face classes, complemented with tutorial guidance and synchronous online classes, asynchronous learning activities, using the Moodle platform, lectures and technical visits.
The teaching method is based on the presentation of theoretical concepts and associated methodologies. During the theoretical and theoretical-practical face-to-face lessons, the students are encouraged to participate and debate the fundamental concepts as well as the methodologies associated with the presentation topics. The available teaching materials include the fundamental theoretical concepts, application exercises, research papers and other relevant documentation.
Evaluation:the student is allowed to choose between two alternative regimes:
Continuous evaluation:two written tests (50%),with equal weight in the final score; project work/monograph (40%),practical works (10%).
Final evaluation:written exam (100%).
