Presentation

Subject aimed at providing students with knowledge related to the extractive industries of ornamental rocks and aggregates crushed stones production.

Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

Provide students with knowledge related to the mining of natural stone. Students should get to know perfectly the sector of ornamental rocks and aggregates (legislation, cycles quarry work, management parameters and design of mining units, equipment, industrial hygiene and safety). They should also have ideas about Quarry Plan, Mining Plan and Environmental Plan Landscape Recovery.

Students should be able to evaluate, propose and implement methodologies related to the ornamental rocks and aggregates exploitation, collect and interpret relevant scientific information on the topics of the curriculum, communicate ideas and scientific knowledge in oral and written form, organized in a coherent and logical way of context affairs of this unit.

The contents enable the future engineer to take on positions of responsibility and technical directories.

Contents

Theoretical
I - Legal framework of the national mining sector.
II - Economic background of the natural stone sector.
III - Development stages of a dimension stone quarry.
IV - Cycle characterization quarry works in extractive units carbonated ornamental stone, slates, granite and similar rocks.
V – Open pit aggregate exploitation. Technical parameters for design of a mining unit.
VI - Cycle quarry works characterization in extractives units for the production of aggregates.
VII - Introduction for executing a quarry plan. Mining plan, PARP and Health and Safety Plan.
Practice
Exercises about management, planning and various technical aspects.
Technical visits to extractive units producing dimension stone and aggregates production.
Internship in quarry (where available).
MaxamPor training (15 hours) on industrial explosives and practice in quarry.

Teaching Methods

Teaching methodology: the teaching methods adopted consist of in-person classes, in order to teach the student the fundamental concepts and techniques on methodologies related to the exploitation of ornamental rock quarries and aggregates quarries, complemented with the field work that gives the student the possibility of acquiring skills in the practical application of the basic principles used in the management and technical direction of quarries, thus being the most appropriate teaching methods to achieve the objectives defined for this Course Unit. Teaching using online platforms (i.e. Zoom) can be used in the theoretical component and in tutorial support.
Assessment: the student is allowed to choose between the two alternative regimes (art. 102 of the RAUE): - Continuous assessment - two written tests with equal weight (50%), with a minimum score of 8 values in each test; - Final assessment - Written exam (100%).
