The curricular unit aims to highlight the importance of historical knowledge for understanding the dynamic of the contemporary societies, focusing on the great transformations of the 20th century.

Learning Goals

It`s a propdeutic course designed to students of 1º Cycle of the School of Social Sciences or other schools of the University. Its main objective to strengthen the general historical knowledge about the formation and characteristics of contemporary societies and the great transformations of the 20Th Century and to help students to contextualize de knowledge of their main areas. The course develops as competences:
1.Konwlegde: Identify the key times, dynamics and changes in the general evolution as well as the characteristics and variety of experience in the emergence , formation of the current national and transnational societies
2. Intellectual skills: to take overkeys concepts that mark the historical analysis of the contemporary world
3. Professional skills: use interdisciplinary of historical knowledge, developing the ability to contextualize processes in time and space; to plan and execute in a teamwork and interdisciplinary environment; work in a multiling

Introduction: History and the Periodization of the "Contemporary"
1. Contemporary Societies and Modernization
2. Societies and the Wars
3. The Nationalism: from the era of nation-states and Identities to the the post-
colonial´s context
4. The experiences of Democracies and Dictatorships. Political Parties and Social
Organizations.
5. Empires and Colonies, Pós-colonialism and decolonization
6. International organizations
7. Regionalism and transnational communities.
8. Americanization, Sovietization and Europeanization
9 The Social States
10. Social Movements
11. Migrations, Diasporas, Returns: Mobilities in the Contemporary World
12. Cultures and knowledge of the 20 Th Century: standards, content, institutions,
actors
13. Education , Higher Education and Society
Conclusion: Societies and the "Present.". Globalisations.
(up to 6 or 7 themes will be selected)

Teaching Methods

Are selected 6-7 topics. Each theme will have 2-3 sessions and an equivalent number
of texts and / or documents that will be discussed in classroom sessions (mandatory).
At the beginning of the semester students should develop their Individual Study Plan
(ISP): choice of two themes which should be involved in through (1) analysis,
comment and submission of a synopsis (panel, roundtable) of documents (texts, films)
selected. At the end of the semester there will be a control test of knowledge. These
three elements form the basis of assessment of knowledge in the system of
continuous assessment, which also requires a minimum 75% attendance in the
classes. Students under final examination are assessed through a compulsory written
and oral examination
It is provided a program guide and a collection of basic texts. Students are
encouraged to use the hours of individual or group tutoring
