Presentation

Philosophical questions about education are addressed to concrete situations of school experience and human formation. The questions are organized by thematic groups, focusing on the problems that currently emerge with relevance.

Objectives of the curricular unit:
5. To contextualize historically the relation between Philosophy and Education.
6. To recognize the specificity of philosophical thinking on Education;
7. To identify the main questions about Education on philosophical texts;
8. To consider philosophical applications to Education.

Contents

Introduction:
1. The emergence of the relationship between Philosophy and Education. Historical and political context. Concepts analysis and theories.
2. Philosophical thinking into education and its specificity.
3. The status of Philosophy of Education.
1st Question:
What relationship between utopia and ideology: philosophical discourses and the meaning of education.
2nd Question:
What challenges for Philosophy of Education? Three issues:
1. Rejecting the Perfectibility of human nature.
2. Practicing democratic values into Educating City.
3. Reconfiguration identities in a global world. Example: gender studies.
Current problems in Philosophy of Education:
1. Violence
2. Corruption

Teaching Methods

Methodology:
1. The contents of the curricular unit will be presented through philosophical articles or books.
2. Students are encouraged to comment texts and to practice thematic debate.
3. The sharing of personal experiences on educational field will be encouraged during these activities.

Evaluation:
The assessment includes the presentation and discussion in groups of an article from an international journal or from a book (40%) and an individual text chosen from syllabus (60%).
