Presentation

This curricular unit intends to contribute to provide students with a scientific culture related to geology and geological processes, both theoretically and in terms of applications, while providing a monitoring of the progress of the thesis work.

Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

The main objectives are:
- to stimulate students' curiosity, interest and scientific culture related to geological sciences, providing them with scientific autonomy and a critical spirit;
- allow students to get in touch with cutting-edge research work related to the theme of geology in its different dimensions and get to know the main problems to be solved and new methodological approaches;
- understand scientific models in this area and develop critical analysis skills;
- to be able to present and discuss scientific information with other students and, in particular, with teachers, researchers, and the scientific community in general.

The acquisition of these skills by the student will be ensured through participation in periodic thematic seminars and their participation in a final annual meeting, in which they will actively participate, presenting the progress of their thesis work.

Contents

Provide students with advanced knowledge in the area of Geological Processes, in particular in the following relevant domains:

- Orogenic processes;
- Transpressive regimes; from kinematics to the dynamics;
- Non conventional Isotopes;
- Micro-analytical techniques in Earth-Sciences;
- Modelling of the Crustal Deformation;
- Seismotectonics ;
- Rheology of the Earth;
- Geochronology of the Orogenic Processes.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will be based on seminars in the area of geological processes on the themes presented in the syllabus, which include critical discussion in which students are also active participants. There will also be tutorial monitoring of students, to prepare the work to be presented in the final workshop. At this meeting there will be oral presentations by students who present progress in the work leading to the doctoral thesis, with a part of the workshop being reserved for scientific discussion. Whenever possible, there will also be a written contribution of these works, reflected in articles to be published.

The assessment is qualitative (Pass or Fail) and will be based on active and critical participation in the seminars held throughout the year (at least half of the seminars, to pass), as well as on the final presentation (mandatory, to pass).
