Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

The program aims to reach a technical and theoretical-practical understanding of photography, through a critical reading and analysis of content focusing techniques and languages on iconic images of various authors. Students will be asked to carry out practical assignments, underpinning different themes. The objectives of this course are:
1. To acquire an understanding of the different modes of production of the photographic image
2. To develop critical and analytical skills with regard to the theory and practice of photography
3. Apply the acquired knowledge to the interpretation and critical analysis of the corpus of images presented in class
4. Develop practical skills in image production, taking into account the following aspects: composition, light, darkroom / clear camera, knowledge of materials and devices, analogue and digital image processing

Contents

Use of light, composition, time of diaphragm and layout, scale, relationship between positive and negative. Through analysis and critical reading of example images in the work of chosen authors, the course will address the relationship between analog photography and digital photography. The practical component of the course will cover: the various types of camera and their handling; analog and digital media; focal lengths and zoom function; diaphragm; setup times and adjustments; natural and artificial light, and lighting techniques; use of filters; framing and composition; Field depth; selective focus; measurement and compensation; analog and digital processing and image printing; work presentation. Throughout the course, the students will perform photographic works, which aim at consolidating the acquired technical and practical knowledge.

Teaching Methods

The course is organized in two stages: a time of exposition by the teacher, followed by a time of discussion and execution of practical work by the students. The evaluation is made based on the student's participation in the class, and on the theoretical-practical exercises to be carried out along the course that together form the basis for the grade to be assigned.
