To prepare students for research, providing the competencies needed for the critical reading of scientific
papers, the preparation of projects and communication in science in its different formats: papers, oral
communications or poster presentations; To provide knowledge of state-of-the-art fundamental and
applied research within the scope of Veterinary Sciences or related areas (animal science, public health,
biomedical science or other relevant life sciences) and the adopted research methodologies; To stimulate
soft-skills acquisition , essential for research, as well as for their future integration in the labour market,
namely autonomy, critical mind thinking, ethics and team work building; To create key capabilities to draw,
create and develop innovating projects within the scope of Veterinary Sciences; To allow training for the
public presentation and discussion of their research work in different contexts and for several audiences.

Contents
- Seminars with invited speakers;
- Oral presentation by students of state-of-the-art knowledge within the scope of their PhD research
project ;
- Presentation and discussion of the students PhD research plan in the presence of the professors alocated to the PhD programme.

Teaching Methods
Seminars and / or webinars ; tutorial orientation ( preparing for the final presentation)
Students should make an oral presentation reviewing the state-of-the-art knowledge in the area planned for
their doctoral thesis, providing the basis for the preparation of the thesis research plan.
The evaluation will lean upon both the students attendance and on two final presentation seminars: one
regarding the state of the art review and the other regarding the thesis project.
