Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

1. To know the main research strategies and critically appreciate their suitability to the problem and the defined objectives.
2. To know the epistemological assumptions that differentiate the quantitative and qualitative research paths and their methodological implications for data collection and analysis
3. To know the three main dimensions of statistical data analysis (simple descriptive, descriptive correlational and inferential), knowing how to differentiate their domains of applicability and their requirements
4. To apply parametric and non-parametric statistical methods of data analysis in education, using appropriate computer support
5. To make appropriate and reasoned statistical decisions
6. To recognize content analysis as the fundamental method of analyzing qualitative data, namely verbal.
7. To be able to perform adequate content analysis, supported by categorization matrices valid and consistent

Contents

1.Quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods: an epistemological and pedagogical illustrative route
2.The quantitative or statistical methods
2.1.The simple descriptive statistics
2.2.Statistical decision: the null hypothesis; the significance level and the confidence level
2.3.The correlational statistic: the Pearson coefficient and the Spearman coefficient
2.4.The Inferential statistics:
2.4.1.Parametric
2.4.1.1.Comparison of averages: the Student t test for two samples (paired or unpaired)
2.4.2.Nonparametric
2.4.2.1. Comparison of overall performance of distributions, proportions or frequencies: the χ2 test and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test
2.4.2.2. Comparison of global performance: the Mann-Whitney test and the Wilcoxon test;
3.Qualitative methods
3.1.Content analysis as a fundamental technique for qualitative data analysis
3.2.Categorization and content analysis: the categories and their fundamental properties

Teaching Methods

Attempts will be made to provide students with sufficiently representative know-how, insisting basically understanding the data analysis procedures in an educational context. Computer and some appropriate software will be valuable tools to use. The continuous assessment regime for students at UC will be based on the following parameters: 1. Attendance, being mandatory to attend 75% of the in person sessions with the class. 2.Realization of a group work, consisting of the guided analysis of a dissertation already completed (50%). 3. Accomplishment of an individual work of practical impact, consisting of the analysis of small corpus of quantitative and qualitative data, taken from real works of educational research and to be provided to students (50%).
In the final evaluation regime, an individual assignment will be carried out (100%)
