Learning Goals

The cu examines the formation of the discipline through a survey of its history, theories, and methodologies; reading and discussion of the works of major scholars in the field; study of the interdisciplinary nature of ethnomusicology, particularly its relationship with historical musicology, anthropology, folklore, linguistics, communication, and cultural studies. Development of knowledge capacities of structuring and synthesis of the unit´s content and the associated written and oral expression training.

– Introduction to the History and development of Ethnomusicology
– Historical Introduction of Ethnomusicology in Portugal.
– Scope and methodologies of Ethnomusicology
– Fieldwork and the concept of “Music-cultures” (1960s-present)
– Case Studies of musical traditions from differing world cultures as practical examples, for understanding/discussion of the development, outlook, theory, and practice of contemporary
ethnomusicology.
– Analysis of Michel Giacometti Videos
– Analysis of the influence of ethnomusicology work in the musical production nowadays in Portugal.
– Application the concept of a music culture to a local music tradition,

Teaching Methods

Theoretical exposition of the main topics of the curricular unit, reading and discussion the works of major scholars in the field, case studies, scientific discussions of the proposed student´s works with tutorial accompaniment in what concerns the student's learning process and the respective oral and written skills. Use of recorded musical examples, both audio and audio/video.

Assessment

Students can choose between:

- Continuous Evaluation:
Written test (50%)
Individual written work (35%)
Oral presentation with digital support (15%)

- Final Evaluation:
Final written exam (100%)
