Presentation

Introduction to the design of geotechnical works, based on knowledge and understanding of the specific requirements of the various geotechnical works, as well as on the geotechnical characterization of geomaterials, in order to optimize their use in civil construction.

Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

The students must should acquire the basics concepts about the design of geotechnical works. These geotechnical design bases must be reinforced on the knowledge and understanding of the specific requirements of the various engineering works (foundations of buildings and other structures, hydraulic works, transport infrastructures, underground works, maritime works, etc.).
In addition, students must also acquire skills in identification of the main geotechnical problems associated with geological conditions of the implantation sites of geotechnical works, in order to develop capacities in the geological and geotechnical analysis of the terrains of interest to engineering works, as well as, in geotechnical characterization of geological materials (geomaterials), in order to optimize its use in civil construction, as also in the development of new perspectives for their application.

Contents

Introduction. Definition of the concept of geotechnical work. Methodologies of the geotechnical design. Eurocode 7. Introduction to Eurocode 8 (aspects related to the geotechnical design under seismic conditions).
Types of geotechnical works:
1. Foundations of buildings and other structures;
2. Retaining walls. Earth pressures. Gravity walls;
3. Hydraulic works (dams, dykes, other river works, etc.);
4. Transport infrastructures (highways, railways, airports, airfields, canals, etc.);
5. Introduction to Embankment works. Landfill Slopes. Compaction;
6. Underground works (tunnels and cavities);
7. Maritime works (harbours, oil rigs, coastal protection structures, etc.);
8. Geomaterials. Its use in building construction. New application perspectives. Site improvement;
9. Introduction to geosynthetics: classification, functions and applications;
10. Study cases. Special geotechnical works.

Teaching Methods

Face-to-face and distance learning. Theoretical and theoretical-practical face-to-face classes, complemented with tutorial guidance and synchronous online classes, asynchronous learning activities, using the Moodle platform, lectures and technical visits.
The teaching method is based on the presentation of theoretical concepts and associated methodologies. During the theoretical and theoretical-practical face-to-face lessons, the students are encouraged to participate and debate the fundamental concepts as well as the methodologies associated with the presentation topics. The available teaching materials include the fundamental theoretical concepts, application exercises, research papers and other relevant documentation.
Evaluation: the student is allowed to choose between the two alternative regimes:
Continuous evaluation: two written tests (60%), with equal weight in the final score; monograph (30%) and practical works (10%).
Final evaluation: written exam (100%).
