This CU aims to:
- Monitor the thesis work already done by the student;
- Encourage students to present their work at conferences;
- Encourage students to participate in seminars and/or conferences;
- Encourage students to publish at least one article in the CEFAGE-UÉ Working Paper Series; or in the
(soon to be launched) CETRAD-UTAD Working Paper Series; or in an appropriate peerreviewed journal.

Contents
This CU is a "work-in-progress seminar" and therefore no formatted programme content exists as such. It
focuses on the framing, discussion and evaluation of doctoral students independent work, in particular
the (written and oral) presentation and public discussion of key facets related to the development of the
thesis. The same discussions are also used to support the doctoral students work by answering
questions, raising issues, ranking options and responding to any other concerns the development of their
research may raise.

Teaching Methods
The UC works on a seminar basis and has and marked component of independent work, guided by the
respective supervisor(s) and any co-supervisor(s). The seminars aim to present and discuss the research
work over the corresponding period of the doctoral process. Academics researchers and organizationbased
visiting speakers take part in discussions, evaluate the exchanges, and answer and pose questions.
The classification in this CU is Pass/Fail. In order to pass, the student has to satisfy the following
conditions:
- To participate in at least 4 of the CETRAD-UTAD Seminar Series or the Seminar Series of CEFAGE-UÉ (or
in conferences, with the approval of the programmes Coordinating Commission);
- To present a paper at a conference, with the approval of the programmes Coordinating Commission;
- To publish an article in the Working Paper Series of CEFAGE-UÉ, or in the (soon to be launched)
