Learning Goals

Main goal: to work with the concepts of society and culture in a contemporary and historical perspective,
21th century agenda. The take off of the public space in the 18th: cultural production (s): artistic, political,
architectural, urban, scientific, technological, material culture and immaterial culture. Stimulate scientific
thinking with society and culture: institutions, actors, cultural vehicles - involving ourselves and the
«other». Pay attention to: Society, Culture and Memory, a virtuous triangle to a laboratory for
experimentation and analysis.
It is our intended to:
a) Recognize and identify issues, problems and historiography currents of the Contemporary World;
b) "Decentralization" of Europe for a global view of societies, states, ideological settings, cultural and
imaginary of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
c) Identify social and cultural agendas as Contemporary sign in a transnational and global vision.

Contents

1. The great 18th century. Public place; Scientific Revolution; Lights and books; industrial Revolution;
French Revolution.
2. Nationalism in Europe, 19th century - society and culture in political and cultural movements.
3. Intellectual: new profile, new roles in society.
4. Newspapers. Reading consumption. The rural and urban spaces.
5. The working class. Cultural and social dynamics.
6. Europe of Nations: International Exhibition - materialization of cultural scenography
7. European Culture, anthropological and colonial cultures.
8. The science and technology in the nineteenth century: social and cultural changes.
9. 1914-1917 - 1918. The end of an era. A global world.
10. Years 30’s - society and culture. Consumption and mass culture.
11. 1939-1945: agenda and debates in the XXI century.
12. Revolution of the 60’s years!
13. The year of 1989. Social and cultural Imaginary in the global world.
14. Towards the twenty-first century - society and culture vs. Internet. New challenges

Teaching Methods

Previous point. Weekly strong use of Moodle platforms. The uc weekly work always with the same mode:
1st lectures lectures; 2nd laboratory classes: analysis and review of a state of the art’s article from
different agendas; it will be an English internationals journals of Modern and Contemporary History article .
This task is mandatory and always made in pre-organized group, always supervised by the teacher in time
tutoring or email support. Open vectors: 3 sessions of HC in charge of invited experts and lead students to
participate in conferences/congresses.
Evaluation - always focus on continuous assessment. Preparation: 3-4 individual texts (reading notes,
bibliographical essays, critical book recession; or preparation of paper/ project in a Group mode and a
class time frequency. Global Examination only for those who are not inserted in the continuous
assessment model.
