Presentation

In a Course aimed at the domain of Heritage, this UC intends to draw attention to the different manifestations of religious Heritage (material and immaterial), of different confessions, complementing the theoretical discourse with visits to the field and with the practical work of the students.

Learning Goals

Objectives: Understand the concepts, peculiarities and characteristics of the religious heritage in its
various manifestations – material (stationary and mobile), immaterial, sacred landscapes; Identify in the
long-term asset testimonies linked to religious manifestations of various confessions; Appreciate the
relevance and application of theoretical and practical tools aimed at the protection, safeguarding and
preservation of the religious heritage Competences: Development of the capacity for analysis of different
situations in progress of safeguarding and enhancement of the religious heritage; Development of skills of
critical reading and oral and written expression and exposure; Developing the capacity to identify and
critical analysis of forms of performance before concrete situations related to the religious heritage.

Contents

1. Concept of religious heritage: its specificity and autonomy in Cultural Heritage
2. The religious heritage and the historical-cultural contexts
2.1. The diversity of places of cult in time and space
2.2. Implementation of built religious heritage in urban areas and in rural areas
2.3. The religious heritage at present: relationship with the culture, landscape and identity
3. The mobile religious heritage: the sacred objects and works of art; the collections, files, databases, and
the guardianship authorities;
4. Intangible religious heritage: from the rites and religious manifestations to romarias and cyclical
pilgrimages.
5. Religious heritage: mechanisms of safeguard and protection , legal and diplomatic, at the national and
international level
6. The patrimonialisation and the sustainability of the religious heritage: case studies

Teaching Methods

Teaching methodology: theoretical and practical lessons, content display, analysis of texts and
presentation of works by the students. The teaching materials used in will be available in the
e-learning platform of the University: www.moodle.uevora.pt At the beginning of the year will be indicated
two weekly hours dedicated to tutorial work, specially in order to accompany the students and give
suggestions for carrying out the works programmed. Evaluation: Final examination or continuous
evaluation, with: 1. An individual research paper on a topic proposed by the student, but that must be
accepted by one of the teachers (40%), with oral presentation (20%). Its preparation will be monitored in
tutorial sessions; 2. A frequency (40%).
