This uc promotes transnational and interdisciplinary dialogue among students who attend it as an option. Based on the long-term reality of cultural history in Portugal, it promotes a critical and creative spirit around cultural memory and history, in a transnational point of view.

Learning Goals

General Objective of the Disciplines: To present a critical and general view of the History of Portuguese Culture, allowing students to know about the most important authors and themes of Portuguese culture from the territorial occupation of the space of formation in Portugal until the 21st century, with openness to the new challenges of “decolonizing” the identity signs of culture in Portugal. Specific objectives: Characterize the concept of Culture as a plural concept, identifying its multiple manifestations; - Understand the different cultural movements as an expression of political, economic, social and ideological circumstances. Understand Portuguese culture in a global context – from the past to the future.

Introduction to concepts: Culture in History and Anthropology. The meeting of two areas to recognize the construction of cultural identity in time and space (Portuguese Culture).Time of Culture in Portugal - the occupation of the peninsular space: Memory, History and Monuments. Medieval Culture in Portugal - traces of the cultural and artistic production. The foundation of University; the Chronicles of the Kingdom. Exploration, Expansion of European Culture with the Council of Trent. The Baroque culture in the context of Europe and outside Europe. The culture of the "Lights": the epicenter of 1755 - Europe "breathes for Lisbon" - "Lights" and Revolution in Portugal. The time of Liberalism, Romanticism and Positivism: the marks of the nineteenth century Portuguese culture. Portugal twentieth century, cultural institutions, cultural ideologies, memory usage and celebrations. Option themes to develop in the Culture of Portugal in the 19th and 20th h centuries.

Teaching Methods

The sessions are composed of lectures, the responsibility of the teaching team or of specific guests for topics to be worked on; there is also the debate of texts in class, preparatory to the assessment modalities. Bibliographic support is always available on the moodle platform. The teaching team provides tutorial and team/individually time. Fostering the critical spirit and autonomy, the assessment is carried out by the continuous assessment model - with individual assessment (50%): production of two academic texts / or 1 frequency (25% + 25%) and by appropriate teamwork monitored and evaluated at different stages of its journey (50%): with a final text and 80% presentation; 20% project evaluation).
