Presentation

The general objective of this course is to provide students with a set of knowledge in the field of Analytical Chemistry, specifically, about the chemical principles that underlie the techniques and analytical methods, classic or modern, with greater application in the area of the environment.

Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

The overall objective of this course is to provide students with a body of knowledge in the field of Analytical Chemistry. Specifically, it is intended that students acquire the knowledge to understand the chemical principles that are particularly important in Analytical Chemistry.
The students must understand the principles of chemical equilibriums of precipitation, acid-base, oxidation-reduction and complexation and should be able to solve problems related with these issues. They must understand as well the principals of chromatographic methods, to use correctly these methods and to analyse the results. The students will realize small projects in the lab using several analytical techniques.

Contents

Sampling and sample preparation; Solubility and precipitation; Selective precipitation separation; Gravimetric analysis; Introduction to volumetric analysis; Precipitation, acid-base, complexation and oxidation-reduction titrations; Introduction to chromatographic methods; High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC).

Teaching Methods

In the teaching of the syllabus, will be used interactive teaching methods and laboratory activities, able to motivate and encourage critical participation of students.
The practical laboratory component of the course is evaluated on a continuous basis, based on attendance and performance observed during the execution of the work, the preparation of reports and the ability to respond to oral and / or written questions about the work performed.
The theoretical and theoretical-practical components are evaluated individually in two optional modes: continuous assessment (two tests) or the final exam. The final grade will be calculated, given the following weights: 30% for the practical laboratory component and 70% of the grade obtained in the theoretical and theoretical-practical components.
