The UC aims to promote an interdisciplinary understanding of the dynamic relationships between ageing, health, and society supported by the knowledge of contemporary Gerontology's theoretical and methodological foundations.

1. Provide an interdisciplinary perspective about the challenges and dilemmas of population aging and its implications in the field of Health;
2. Know the theoretical-methodological foundations of Gerontology;
3. Explain the dynamic relationships between ageing, health and society;
4. Explain and critically analyze the interaction between aging and the plural needs of the elderly;
5. Promote critical thinking on the issues of active and successful aging in the context of life span in contemporary societies.

We intend that, at the end of the teaching sessions, students will have acquired the following skills:
- It understands the interdisciplinary relevance of the object of study of Gerontology;
- Understands the main issues of the interdisciplinary approach to the plural problems of population aging;
- Identify, list and summarize in an interdisciplinary perspective the problems of active and successful aging in the context of life span in contemporary societies.

Contents

1: Gerontology, health and society: concepts, controversies and critical analysis;
2: Life span and quality of life of the elderly in contemporary societies;
3: Health promotion and empowerment of older people;
4: Innovation in the context of strategies to support active and healthy aging (successful);
5: Innovation in social and health care in aging.

Teaching Methods

Classes will take place in modules, through theoretical (T) classes with the support of audiovisual media. In classes, the different contents of the curricular unit will be transmitted using expository methodologies, to contextualize the topics to be addressed, and more active methodologies, such as case studies to achieve the objectives.
In addition to the content teaching exhibition by the teacher, classes also count with student’s participation, individually or in small groups, and based on previously distributed resources or gathered through self-study.
