Learning Goals

The overall objective of this course is to promote the comparative study of recurrent themes and topics in Portuguese literature and French literature of the Middle Ages.

In the end, the student should be able to:
1. Understand the specificity of textual relations peculiar to this period, including rewriting practices such as redaction, translation, continuation.
2. Understand how, in this cultural space, circulate forms, themes and literary influences.
3. Develop an independent research in this field of studies, based on analytical and interpretive instruments which are provided.

Contents

1. The diffusion of Provencal troubadour poetry in literary courts of the Iberian Peninsula.
2. Chretien de Troyes, Perceval ou Le Roman du Graal. Portuguese translations of French Grail cycles.
3. The Matter of Britain in the Portuguese Livros de Linhagens.
4. Gil Vicente and the French theater of the Middle Ages.

Teaching Methods

The curricular unit will operate in a regime of seminars. After the introductory sessions for presentation of general aspects, at the remaining sessions students will present papers related to the syllabus and can be, or literary analysis, or approach of critical essays.
The evaluation result of the average grade obtained in the papers presented orally during the semester, and a written report at the end.
