Learning Goals

The general objective of the curricular unit is to promote the comparative study of themes and topics recurrent in Portuguese literature and in French literature from the Middle Ages.

In the end, the student should be able to:

1. Understand the specificity of the textual relations of this period, namely rewriting practices such as translation or continuation.

2. Understand how, in this cultural context, forms, themes and literary influences circulate.

3. Develop an autonomous investigation in this study area, using the analytical and interpretive tools provided.

Contents

1. Provençal poetic arts and the dissemination of troubadour poetry in peninsular literary courts.

2. The “Matéria da Bretanha” (Arthurian Cycle). Portuguese translations of the French Grail cycles.

3. Gil Vicente and the French theater of the late Middle Ages: genres and characters.

Teaching Methods

The curricular unit works in a seminar regime. After the introductory sessions to present the essential aspects of the cultural and literary universe in question, the remaining sessions will be dynamized by the students, with the presentation of works related to the syllabus, which can be either literary analysis or critical essays approach.
The evaluation will result from the average of the classification obtained in the works presented orally during the semester and from a written report presented at the end of the semester.
