Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

Develop the knowledge and capabilities of using computational models and software in the analysis of mechatronic systems.
Capabilities to be developed:
(a) use software in the kinematic and dynamic analysis of mechanical system;
(b) use software in the analysis of electric and electronic circuits;
(c) use finite element software in the analysis of multiphysics problems;
(d) combine the use of different softwares in the analysis of mechatronic systems;
(e) gain notions on how the computational tools are developed.

Contents

1. Kinematic and dynamic computer analysis of rigid body mechanical systems in 2D and 3D. Application to robotics.
2. Electric and electronic circuit simulation.
3. Finite element analysis of coupled electrical, magnetic, thermal, fluid flow, structural and control problems. Modelling of active materials. The piezoelectric and magnetostrictive cases.
4. Application to MEMS.

Teaching Methods

Teaching consists of two weekly two hour classes (theoretical-practical) where analysis software is explained and used in the solution of examples. The limitations of the software are analysed with theoretical justifications, and some insights on how it is developed are provided, the extent of which depends on the student motivation. Two hour tutoring per instructor is weekly available outside classes during all the semester.
The student’s assessment consists of one final exam [E_i] (two dates available) and four assignments [A_k]. All elements are marked in the range [0, 20]. There is a minimum mark of 9.0 for any E_i.
The final grade [NF] is given by:
N = 0.3 * max(E1, E2) + 0.7 * (A1+A2+A3+A4)/4;
if (E1 or E2)>= 9.0 then NF = N
else NF = min(N, 9.0);
The student is approved if NF>= 9.5.
