Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

To identify the main species of edible wild mushrooms, distinguishing them from toxic congeners, and understand the properties of these species, plus, identify the harvesting and mycological resources management good practices. Specifically: 1) Acquire basic notions of mycology, in particular about the life cycle and the trophic guilds of mushroom-producing fungi; 2) Identify the main edible wild mushroom species with commercial interest, distinguishing them from non-edible and toxic species; 3) Know the preferred habitat and seasonality of edible wild mushroom species and their non-edible and toxic congeners; 4) Know how to harvest and handle wild mushrooms, in accordance with harvesting and packaging good practices; 5) Know how to record the harvest and productivity of edible wild mushroom species; 6) Acquire notions about the mycological resources management in forest stands.

Contents

1. Introduction to Mycology: Systematics, Life cycles, Trophic guilds, nutraceutical properties.
2. Identification of Mushrooms (macrofungi): what are they, how to identify, where they live, toxic and non-toxic.
3. Harvesting wild mushrooms: identification and registration (field and laboratory), good practices.
4. Mycological resources management: Value in forest stands, Ecological succession, productivity

Teaching Methods

Theoretical, theoretical-practical, and practical lessons with face-to-face teaching. In the theoretical and theoretical-practical lessons will be presented the concepts and contents and will proceed to the guidance of the learning process. The practical lessons will occur in laboratories and "in open space", whenever possible, through field trips, to visit places of recognized interest.
Each theoretical session will consist on exposition and discussion periods, aiming the students critical reflection and participation in the teaching-learning process. Audiovisual media will be used, including commented animations, illustrative of the topics addressed. In the theoretical-practical classes, concrete situations will be analyzed and discussed together with the students, who will be motivated to collaborate, suggesting cases to be addressed. In practical classes (laboratory and field) students will be able to observe and learn to recognize edible mushroom species and their toxic congeners.

Assessment

The evaluation is based on a theoretical multiple choice questions test and a practical test (identification of wild mushroom specimens), both on a scale of 0 to 20 points. The theoretical test will have a weighting of 50% and the evaluation of the practical component will have a weighting of 50%. For approval it is necessary to obtain an evaluation equal to 10 or higher. If they do not obtain approval, they will be able to repeat the tests on a date to be agreed upon.
