Learning Goals

Part of a six-semester course aiming a progressive technical development in their specific area of jazz instrument, this course will generally focus on the following aspects:
- Cognitive (interpretation of notation and oral music, improvisation, and historical background of repertoire to be studied)
- Musical / expressive (discovery, awareness, development of individual creativity and musical instinct)
- Technical (knowledge of the particular operation of the instrument according to the repertoire
- Communicative (extra-musical aspects of performance: conventions, dress codes)

Contents

Study (and subsequent public presentation) of specific compositions of the jazz repertoire. The individual program, by instrument, will be set by the teacher for each student at the beginning of the semester, depending on the specific aptitudes, the degree of development and technical / artistic maturity of the latter. In the sequence of Instrument Jazz V, this course aims the progressive technical and artistic development in the following areas:
- Instrument technique (posture, breathing, control of specific effects and general proficiency)
- Jazz Improvisation (forms; relative scale / chord, rhythm)
- Study of scales and arpeggios, as well as common 'patterns'
- Study and practice of standard Jazz repertoire of the following styles and eras: Early jazz / New Orleans; swing; bebop; Hard Bop; West Coast; Fusion; Avant-garde and Contemporary
- Technique for small ensemble arrangement
- Solo transcription

Teaching Methods

Definition of the individual program and bibliography, according to the student's profile, by the teacher.
Individual lessons based on an interactive teaching methodology, including commentaries, exemplification, suggestions, feedback, reinforcement, practices of formative evaluation and self-evaluation, detailed indications concerning the work to be done in autonomy until the next lesson and respective planning.
Organization of complementary activities (auditions, seminars, master classes, etc.)
Evaluation:
- definition and pondering of continuous evaluation parameters concerning the student's participation, assiduity, performance, progression - 40%
public exam before a jury: performance of about 25 minutes, including a minimum of 2 contrasting works, excluding orchestral excerpts; the repeats indicated in the chosen works must not be played - 60%.
