Learning Goals

- To promote theoretical and practical knowledge of the main esthetical musical trends developped in Portugal since 1960, through the study of paradigmatic composers and works, as well as of specific aspects of various compositional systems used in the defined time frame.
- To develop specific technical, expressive and analytical competences in relation to the studied repertoire, such as:
- Identifying technical difficulties and particularities of instrumental performance
- Acquiring competences for the performance of complex rhythmic and melodic structures, as well as for a correct approach of timbre in the studied repertoire.
- Recognizing and mastering innovations concerning new notational strategies
- To stimulate an autonomous performative approach of the given repertoire
- To foster knowledge of specific forms of musical notation
- To study the main characteristics and singularities of Portuguese electroacoustic music.

Contents

This UC includes a theoretical and a practical component. The first focuses on:
- Portuguese music in the 1st half of the 20th century.
- The 60's-70's: J. Peixinho, C. Rosa, A. Salazar, C. Lima. The establishment of GMCL and other groups.
- The 80's: E. Nunes, C. Bochmann, J. P. Oliveira, A. Sousa Dias, A. Pinho Vargas, A. Vasques Dias. The teaching of musical composition.
- The 90's: M. Azguime, J. Madureira, C. Caires, L. Tinoco, P. Amaral, I. Soveral, A. Chagas Rosa.
- Portuguese musical creation since 2000.
The practical component focuses on works from the Portuguese repertoire of the study period, for solo instruments or small chamber ensembles, which are worked upon from an esthetical, technical and interpretative standpoint. In both components, direct contact with chosen composers is encouraged, both in classroom situations and through student's initiative, namely in the context of the research process leading to the realization of a required written essay.

Teaching Methods

Definition of the general program and specific musical pieces to be worked on during the semester, according to the student's profile; this definition is the teacher's responsibility, bearing in mind motivational issues specific to each student.
Group classes based on an interactive teaching methodology, including exposition by the teacher (in the theoretical component) and performance by the students (in the practical component), commentaries, exemplification, suggestions, feedback, reinforcement, practices of formative evaluation and self-evaluation, detailed indications concerning the work to be done in autonomy until the next lesson and respective planning.
Evaluation methodology:
- definition and pondering of continuous evaluation parameters concerning assiduity, punctuality and classroom participation: 10%
- Practical test: 60%
- Written essay: 20%; classroom presentation of the written essay: 10%
