Learning Goals

1. Knowing Democracy as a political doctrine and how it has become crucial in contemporary pedagogy and education.
2. Because this doctrine has become a structural ideology in our societies and it is broadly intended to orient educational policies, we need to study the historical evolution of this concept and of its practical application.
3. The student of Educational Sciences can and should to be able to deep his own experience as a citizen and his understanding of the role the education institutions play in the process of democratic development of societies.

1. Democracy - History of an Idea.
1.1. Democracy in Greco-Roman antiquity.
1.2. Democracy - from classical antiquity to the sixteenth century.
1.3. Democracy - XVII-XVIII centuries.
1.4. "Democracy in America."
1.5. Democracy in the twentieth century: Robert Michels's "iron law of oligarchy", deliberative democracy and neo-republicanism.

2. Democracy and Education.
2.1. Democracy & Education - New Schools Movement.
2.2. Democracy & Education - John Dewey.
2.3. Democracy & Education - Portugal - João de Barros.
2.4. Democracy & Education - Portugal - António Sérgio.

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods:
a) Theoretical and Practical classes - In an initial moment the teacher exposes a framework and a synthesis on each subject. In a second moment of "practical" nature we do an analysis and interpretation of essential texts / documents.
Methods of assessment:
a) 1 Written Test or a final exam.
b) 2 short essays - each one focused on authors, themes or issues concerning, respectively, to Chapter 1 and 2 of the Programme.
