This course aims to familiarize students with the main characterizing aspects of medieval archeology, from Late Antiquity to the Low Middle Ages, introduce the main historiographical debates and use the vocabulary and concepts and categories of the Middle Ages

Knowledge:
? Recognize the archaeological components that may be found in any research work and that characterize the Middle Ages;
? Critically analyze the main research trends in order to properly contextualize the material and historical data and their true importance and significance;
Skills:
? Provide appropriate methodologies for the identification and investigation of the material realities of the medieval peninsular period;
? Characterize the heritage remains from the medieval period existing in Portugal?both in urban and rural areas?as well as in other Iberian regions, along with the material culture associated with them;
? Acquire work skills to be able to participate in and eventually lead archaeological excavations in this area, as well as to study unpublished collections.

Teaching Methods
Theoretical and theoretical-practical classes (60-40%), in order to alternate the content exposition with the direct confrontation with concrete archaeological realities of the medieval period, through the reading of articles, contact with archaeological materials and study visits to sites and medieval monuments. In this way, learners will be able to recognize the concrete material realities that medieval civilization left in our territory and identify and interpret the archaeological remains of a large part of the medieval period.
Assessment
Evaluation by frequency of classes (at least 75% of contact hours) is composed of written test (50%); individual work (four compulsory readings) with a weight of 40% and participation in group work in (10%). The student still has the final examinations, according to the general evaluation regulations of the University
