Acquisition of knowledge and development of skills related to plant and animal production systems to understand their organization, interdependencies and multifunctionality. Development of animal observation and handling skills, taking into account animal welfare standards. Obtaining knowledge regarding the general concepts and principles of structural organization and operation of agricultural companies, as well as a brief approach to their technical-economic evaluation. Know the main entities / policies / programs / regulations that interact with the organization and functioning of agricultural companies

Contents

1. Rational management and handling of animals
General concepts on agricultural production systems, ethology and animal welfare
Principles of rational handling and manipulation, in accordance with the rules of animal welfare.
Tasks associated with animal handling
Performing tasks inherent to the exploitation of species of zootechnical interest: cattle (meat and milk), horses, sheep (meat) and pigs.
2. The agricultural enterprise and its framework
Concept, characteristics and structural and technical-economic evaluation of agricultural companies
Ministry of Agriculture, GPP, SIMA and IFAP
Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and World Trade Organization (WTO)
Livestock farming regime (REAP)
Rural Development Programs (PDR)
Plant and animal production, food consumption and trade in agricultural products in the national, European and world context.
3. Study visits to Producer Associations, Certification Companies, livestock auctions and agricultural companies

Teaching Methods

Teaching is based on theoretical-practical and practical and laboratory sessions. There will be a theoretical component for the presentation of subjects, followed by practical tasks in group or individual. The sessions will involve active and face-to-face student participation. Classroom sessions involve the student's work on a computer (research on websites or solving practical cases related to the agricultural company). The student can choose the Continuous Assessment or Final Assessment regime, which, together with an individual report on a topic to be agreed between student and teacher, will constitute the assessment elements.
Continuous Assessment: Two intermediate testes whose final classification represents 40% of the final grade in UC
Final Assessment: An exame on all the subjects taught in the semester, whose classification represents 40% of the final grade in UC.
Report: The classification obtained represents 60% of the final grade in UC.
