Learning Goals

This subject provides students with essential methodological criteria and formal devices for the preparation of academic and extra-academic work. It is intended to foster and develop the student research practice in a rigorous and independent way and to contribute for the development of oral and written language and their articulation of contents.

1. Creativity, exercise and production in research.
1.1. Paradigms of research;
1.2. Research and planning;
1.2.1. Strategies of search:
1.2.1.1. Select theme – font selection;
1.2.2. Bibliographical and documentary archives and libraries;
1.2.3. Qualitative and quantitative methods;
1.2.4. Multiplicity of media in research;
1.2.5. Techniques of synthesis and analysis: databases; thematic and citation; critical reviews; standards and criteria for citation; primary and secondary bibliography; citations of URLs
1.2.6. Current research through technological means.

2. Presentation of research results.
2.1. Organization of speech – commentary, dissertation;
2.2. Types of thesis;
2.3. Formal aspects: graphic criteria and drafting;
2.4. Frames;
2.5. Quotes;
2.6. Footnotes;
2.7. Annexes and appendices;
2.8. Indexes;
2.9. Bibliography.

Teaching Methods

The classes will take place through theoretical exposition, appealing to the student's participation, with several exercises.
Continuous assessment requires the following practical work:
– Preparation of a bibliography with at least 30 mentions including: monographs, journals, theses and URLs;
– Preparation of a reading form that includes quotations from a book of the student's choice;
– Practical in which the student will prepare a summary of a text given by the Professor;
– Elaboration of a critical review of a work selected by the student;
– Practical exercises performed in class.
The first four exercises correspond to 70% of the final grade; the last exercises and participation in classes to 30%.
The evaluation criteria will be as follows:
– Quality of work;
– Student attendance as a guarantee of learning;
– Amount of work;
– Ability to evolve.
There is the possibility of completing this course unit by examination, to be agreed with the Professor.
