1. To acquire knowledge regarding the theorizing of dramatic genres in Classical Antiquity.
2. To recognize and problematize the relationship between text and performance in the cultural context of ancient Greece and Rome.
3. To understand the importance to the theatrical canon of the English Renaissance.
4. To appreciate the Baroque period as a form of reaction and experimentation.
5. Brief perspective of the Romantic and melodramatic theatre.
6. To equate the modern period under symbolist, realist, absurd and ritual theatre.
7. To grasp the implications of Postmodern theatre.

Contents

1. Ancient Greek theatre and Performance Criticism.
2. Greek and Latin comedy: from text to performance. The importance of Metatheatre.
3. Greek tragedy: problematic of the relationship between text and opsis.
4. Roman tragedy: problems of the theatricality of Senecan tragedy.
5: The Elizabethan theatre: Shakespeare and the oral tradition.
6. The Baroque theatre: Continuity and innovation; the stage of over-experimentation.
7. Romantic theatre: melodrama has means of representation.
8. Modern theatre: from symbolism to silence.
9. Postmodern theatre in the post-truth age.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical and practical classes including lectures and using media contents that are uploaded in the beginning of every in the moodle. Continuous assessment or final exam, according to the Academic Regulation of the University of Évora (RAU) and to the specific provisions of the DLL Regulation which determine:
a) Continuous assessment includes at least two assessment components, one of which a written test, whose grade cannot be less than 8 values.
A percentage of 50% is attributed to the written test, and an equal percentage to the evaluation elements proposed during the semester.
b)Final Exam Evaluation (normal, appeal, special and extraordinary seasons) consists of a written test (100%). Students who score between 8 and 9.4 on the written test need to do an oral exam.
