Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

This course aims to provide a broad-based overview of the scientific fields that focus on lexicon, by presenting and discussing concepts, descriptive models, methodologies, fundamental lines of thought and specific domains of research and their interfaces. The main objective is, thus, to give an account of the complexity of the lexical level of language and also of the variety of perspectives involved in it. In addition to the acquisition of theoretical knowledge, the course specifically aims to provide competences and analytical / descriptive tools, a linguistic level which requires the confluence of several fields of linguistic knowledge, and to apply the acquired knowledge into practical work. The close relationship between theory and practice (Lexicon Workshop), which aims at working with available materials or producing new ones, allows for the development of skills that lead students from “knowledge” to a “know how to do” in specific domains of the study of lexicon.

Teaching Methods

The course is carried out by means of theoretical and practical collective sessions. Theoretical exposition (with the use of power point, texts, databases and online corpora) aim to prepare students for the practical work to be developed in the Lexicon Workshop to take place during the second part of it, providing the students with the opportunity to develop individual work and to interact among them. In the Lexicon Workshop students apply acquired knowledge in the first part of the semester and are trained in the use of specific tools and production of materials in some of the topics covered in the syllabus. Students are encouraged to outline and develop work on a topic at their choice.
Students’ autonomous work will be supervised in weekly tutorial sessions.
Students may choose between two modes of assessment: (i) submission of a written essay on one of the topics of the syllabus (100%); (ii) written exam (in accordance with RAUÉ).
