- Develop a better understanding of the musical language of jazz through aural training;
- Incorporate theoretical knowledge into the hearing process;
- Develop proficiency in aural skills and dictation.
Upon completion of this course, students should be able:
- To identify aurally different types of seventh chords by quality.
- To identify aurally chord progressions and modulations.
- To show proficiency in transcribing onto paper melodic and rhythmic dictation exercises.

- One and two-part melodic dictation exercises.

Teaching Methods
In the classroom:
- Practical exercises: working together with students on selected examples.
Outside the classroom:
- Students are given weekly assignments in pdf and mp3 file formats. These exercises are available for download through the Learning Management System Moodle.
Teaching aids: video-projector, computer-based presentations, digital piano.
Assessment:
Students can choose between:
Continuous Assessment:
- Weekly assignments (50%)
- Written examination of two hours' duration (50%)
Final exam:
- Written examination of two hours' duration (100%)
