Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

This course aims to sensitize students to the study and conservation of cultural heritage by providing them with skills in relation to the analytical methodologies used for characterization and diagnosis of their conservation status.
Case studies will be used to exemplify the multi-analytical methodologies normally necessary to answer the questions asked by historians, archaeologist, and conservators-restorers.

Contents

General overview of the analytical methodologies used for material analysis and assessment of the conservation status of a cultural heritage artefact:
- area exams (visible, IR, UV and racking photography; IR reflectography, X-radiography),
- in-situ analytical techniques ( X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectrometry, colorimetry)
- microanalysis techniques (optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman microscopy, infrared microscopy).
Case studies on easel and mural painting, stone, mortars, metals, textiles, glass, ceramics and graphic documents will be used to exemplify the analytical methodology used to answer questions related to the materials used in the production of an artefact or about their conservation status

Teaching Methods

The teaching is based on theoretical-practical classes where the students will learn the application of the different analytical techniques using real case studies applied to concrete practical situations (examples will be drawn from the analytical expertise of the teachers involved and the know-how of the HERCULES Laboratory from Évora University).
Students evaluation will be based on the level of understanding of the analytical concepts and their ability to use them in new case studies.
- Continuos evaluation will be done through written tests (55% of the final grade), writing a monograph on a case study chosen by the student with the support and supervision of teachers (30% of the final grade) and its oral presentation (15% of the final grade).
- The student can choose to do only a final exam at the end of the semester (100% final grade).
