Learning Goals

The main objective of this unit is to allow students to establish a thorough knowledge body in the areas of dairy cow physiology, nutrition, reproduction and genetics. It is expected that students will be able to demonstrate deep knowledge of dairy cow production systems, including know-how in new techniques for dairy cow production and management.

Contents

Basic economic principles of dairy production in Portugal, Europe and in the World. Market analysis. Milk production and biosynthesis. Management of dairy cow (feeding, milking, reproduction and breeding). Feeding dairy cows to reduce nutrient excretion Milk production constrained the soil and climatic conditions in some world regions.


 


New management techniques (focused on reproductive, molecular biology, mammary gland biology, nutritional physiology, dairy nutrition and the environment, breeding, dairy cow welfare and production). 

Teaching Methods

Teaching Methodology: Students will be encouraged to develop their own work, researching and made  a few themes in a proprietary format (poster, presentation in Congress.) Some of the topics will be presented in English. The teaching sessions will be essentially interpretation on specific cases and presented by teachers. The aim is to implement a methodology of learning focused to presentation of the problem - how to approach - what the outcome – what future outlook.


Assessment

Assessment: by continuing assessment (academic works) . And a oral presentation with written part
