Learning Goals

It is intended that students develop the ability to:

Recognize the pathophysiological mechanisms inherent to the most common diseases in horses.
Carry out a clinical history and a complete physical examination in the adult horse and foal
Choose and carry out complementary diagnostic methods.
Interpret clinical examination data and complementary results
Establish differential diagnoses.
Institute appropriate therapy
Assess the clinical evolution of the animal and establish a prognosis.
Institute prophylactic measures in individual and group medicine.
Perform usual procedures in the horse clinical practice
Develop a spirit of scientific research, particularly in the clinical area.
Apply knowledge in practical clinical situations.

THEORETICAL PROGRAM
Diseases of the cardiovascular system:
Anemia
Diseases of the upper respiratory system
Infectious diseases of the respiratory system
Diseases of the lower respiratory system
Dermatology in horses
Endocrine disorders in horses
Diseases of the urinary system
Neurology

PRACTICAL PROGRAM
General clincal exam
Specific examination of the respiratory system
Cardiovascular examination. ECG
Diagnostic techniques in the respiratory system: endoscopy and X-ray
Bandage practice in horses
Laboratory sample collection
Routes of administration in horses
Catheter placement
Monitoring and discussion of clinical cases
Nursing procedures

Teaching Methods

The theoretical component of the UC will be taught in 1h classes, by teachers assigned to the discipline.
Practical classes will take place at the Clinical Horse Unit of the Stud Farm in Alter.
Groups of 4-8 students will have practical classes, on a weekly module basis, in which they will have to carry out various procedures, attending to existing clinical cases, of which they will have to present daily clinical reports to the service veterinarian.
-Theoretical assessment (60%), final written exam
-Practical Assessment (40%), participation in practical classes (attendance, knowledge, interest and completion of clinical records, 50%) and oral presentation of a case in clinical round (50%). Special status students, not attending practical classes, must submit a clinical case in writing (anamnesis, physical examination, differential diagnoses, complementary examinations, definitive diagnosis, therapy and evolution).
