Sustainable Development Goals
Learning Goals
Understand the physical basis of the atmospheric motion in terms of forces and primitive equations. Apply scale analysis to determine the dominant processes operating in various meteorological phenomena. Assimilate fundamental concepts and tools of dynamic meteorology, including vorticity and divergence. This learning outcomes in dynamical meteorology follow the basic instruction package for meteorologists proposed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 2015.
Contents
Real and apparent forces in a rotating fluid. The atmospheric primitive equations of momentum and mass conservation. Scale analysis of the equations of motion. Elementary applications of the equations of motion: geostrophic, cyclostrophic and gradient wind, and vertical motion. Circulation, vorticity and divergence.
Teaching Methods
Lectures with recourse to meteorological case studies and projection of figures. Use of meteorological charts.
Assessment
Assessment: individual work (50%), test (50%).
Alternative: final exam (100%).
Alternative: final exam (100%).
