Learning Goals

The objective of the course is twofold: to equip students with knowledge and analytical skills in the specialized area of Portuguese as a Foreign Language, and to introduce them to the processes involved in the construction of linguistic knowledge within the framework of the acquisition / learning of a foreign language.
By the end of the semester, students will be able to:
1. Identify processes of linguistic knowledge and construction;
2. Identify different theoretical models in the area of Portuguese as a Foreign Language;
3. Understand the language policies related to Portuguese as a Foreign Language;
4. Analyse critically pedagogical materials that promote best practices.

Teaching Methods

The teaching methodologies devised consist of teaching sessions, in which students are required to participate actively, and weekly tutorial sessions, which aim to supervise students‟ autonomous research work.
Students may choose between two modes of assessment: (i) continuous assessment, including participation in in-class activities (accounting 40% of the final grade) and the writing and oral presentation of one end-of-semester essay (accounting 60% of the final grade); (ii) exam.
