Learning Goals
To provide students with in-depth knowledge of theories and practices of syntactic analysis, as described in point 2. of the syllabus.
Theoretical and descriptive problematization of these items is aimed at, either by highlighting movements of rupture within the Portuguese standard, or by the possibility of differentiated approaches.
Students are expected to:
- Understand the language dynamics at the syntactic level.
- Apply theoretical and practical knowledge to different approaches when describing Portuguese syntactic phenomena.

Contents
1. Different approaches to syntactic analysis: traditional grammar vs. structural grammar(s) (valence grammar; functional syntax; generative syntax; discursive-functional grammar)
2. Descriptive theoretical principles of Portuguese syntax
2.1. SVO order; constituent structure; syntactic agreement
2.2. Syntactic functions: subject category; predication; complementation strategies
2.4. Complex sentence structure: coordination and subordination (critical areas)

Teaching Methods
The teaching methodologies consist of collective teaching sessions, in which students are required to participate, and of weekly tutorial sessions, so as to supervise students autonomous research work.
Students may choose between two modes of assessment: (i) continuous assessment, including participation in in-class activities (accounting 40% of the final grade) and the writing and oral presentation of one end-of-semester essay (accounting 60% of the final grade); (ii) exam.
