Summary
This application was born out of the project designated History of the Alentejo carried out during recent years by the CIDEHUS. The themes selected intend only to fill bibliographical gaps.
Regarding the spatial areas covered by the study, as the Évora sub-region is the most researched region, we selected the two other main cities, Portalegre and Beja, along with the judicial districts of Ourique and Santiago de Cacém / Sines. As regards chronology, we propose to cover a period beginning in the 9th century, in order to assess the effects of the Muslim inheritance, and stretching up to the New State, since the Alentejo played a crucial role in the economic and social agenda of the regime and of its propaganda.
Other themes we intend to examine are: demographic and agrarian structures; systems of political communication, social stratification, conflict and social change. Finally, global indicators will be used for constructing the first digital historical atlas of the Alentejo.
