Summary

The project focuses on the study of city/river relationships to investigate opportunities for intervention in urban riverfront in ways that will bring about positive change towards sustainable development in fluvial cities.
The urgency and need to devise strategies that bring us closer to urban sustainability has been greatly emphasized by the international community.

To accomplish this, the research team will be first studying factors that will help define a typology of city/river relationships in order to better inform specific recommendations regarding policy and management options in urban development processes in different types of fluvial cities. The team will also study the development of thematic sustainability indicators pertinent to fluvial cities (particularly in the areas of landscape structure, perception and identity, land use and mobility, and participation). The indicators selected will be tested in cities representative of different types identified.

Goals, activities and expected/achieved results

       -         to contribute to the understanding of city/river relationships in order to identify typologies that will better inform specific recommendations regarding urban policy and management options;

-         to develop indicators in areas relevant to sustainability of fluvial cities which have been proven difficult to operationalize (e.g. landscape perception);
