Summary

The EU GREEN project consists of nine work packages, listed below:

Work Package 1: Innovative management and coordination of the project (led by UEx; co-led by OVGU)

Work Package 2: An educational model cantered on sustainability and the SDGs (led by UPWr; co-led by UÉ)

Work Package 3: Structuring research-based learning through Excellence Clusters (led by UA; co-led by UNIPR)

Work Package 4: Innovation and entrepreneurship for sustainability (led by UÉ; co-led by ITC)

Work Package 5: Engagement for sustainable societies and economies (led by ITC; co-led by UO)

Work Package 6: Fostering mobility and international collaboration for education on sustainability (led by UNIPR; co-led by UPWr)

Work Package 7: Access, diversity and inclusion (led by UO; co-led by HiG)

Work Package 8: Building a truly sustainable and healthy campus (led by HiG; co-led by UA)

Work Package 9: Communication, Dissemination and Impact (led by OVGU; co-led by UEx)

Four of them revolve around the four classical missions of a university system: Education (Work Package 2), Research (Work Package 3), Innovation and entrepreneurship (Work Package 3) and Engagement (Work Package 4). The first one is on the management and coordination of the project (Work Package 1), and the last one on communication, dissemination and impact of the project (Work Package 9). There are three additional ones on transversal issues that are key for the call and for our vison: mobility and internationalisation (Work Package 6), access, diversity and inclusion (Work Package 7) and sustainable campuses (Work Package 8).

All nine work packages have a duration of 48 months each and will run in parallel throughout the four years of the project. This is because they are big, continuous work packages that will entail a long-term transformative process for the nine partner institutions. In fact, the project and the nine work packages are designed to set the basis for the long-term duration of EU GREEN as a European University – therefore, many of the structures, processes and models set up throughout the duration of the work packages are expected to continue in place beyond the 4-year period.

Carefully designed milestones will serve as internal control points to track the progress of the project. Deliverables have been distributed throughout the four years taking into account the specificities of the Lump Sum grant format and the needs of each work package. Each partner institution leads a work package. However, this is only for organisation purposes – in fact, each and every one of the nine work packages has been co-designed between different working groups, each including representatives from all institutions.

Goals, activities and expected/achieved results

EU GREEN is built around a true perspective of sustainability, encompassing the economic, societal, cultural and environmental dimensions of the term and their impact on one another. Our approach is closely aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals across all four of our core missions: education, research, innovation and service to society. Together we have built an inclusive and collaborative partnership that places these SDGs at the heart of our research and innovation approach and integrates them in our teaching and learning model.

1.      Create robust and resilient foundations which will allow EU GREEN to reach a full long-term strategic alignment. This will be achieved by pooling resources, by building common infrastructures and by developing common procedures.

2.      Establish a true EU GREEN inter-university campus and build an EU GREEN community of learners, researchers, teachers, administrative staff, fully connected with each other and with our regional ecosystems

3.      Embed environmental education and education for sustainable development into all elements of our system (education, research, innovation and entrepreneurship, engagement with society, campus life), with a focus on the 6 EU GREEN research clusters, building transdisciplinary European knowledge teams
