Summary
The project "Present to the Past, Archaeological Tourism in Alentejo" aims to modernize the offer of archaeological tourism in Alentejo through the implementation of information technologies. Promoted by the Campo Arqueológico de Mértola and the University of Évora, the project intends to revisit and update the Archaeological Itineraries of Alentejo. The main result will be the development of a web platform and an application (APP) with 3D reconstructions of archaeological sites, with the objective of enhancing the heritage, improving the tourist experience and contributing to the sustainable development of the region.
In this phase of the project, the sites to be integrated are the following:
- The Roman villa of Pisões, located in the Municipality of Beja and owned by the University of Évora.
- The Roman villa of São Cucufate, in Vila de Frades, Municipality of Vidigueira.
- The Roman villa of Torre de Palma, Monforte.
- The Roman city of Miróbriga, Santiago do Cacem.
- The Prehistoric settlement of Santa Vitoria, Campo Maior.
- The Archaeological Circuit of Castro da Cola, in Ourique.
- The prehistoric site of Gruta do Escoural, in the Municipality of Montemor-o-Novo.
- The Monumental Complex of Mértola.
The project has an integrative vocation, allowing for the incorporation of other archaeological sites with adequate visitation conditions in the future.
Goals, activities and expected/achieved results
- Objectives:
- Modernize the archaeological tourism offer of Alentejo by investing in information technologies as a priority mechanism for education, communication, and dissemination of information.
- Create interpretation tools, based on New Technologies, for the dissemination of the archaeological heritage of Alentejo, namely a web platform and an application (APP) allowing access to 3D reconstructions of specific sites.
- Capitalize on the scientific work developed by the University of Évora on the archaeological heritage of Alentejo by transferring it to the community.
- Activities:
- Development of a web platform to provide relevant and attractive information about archaeological sites, including augmented reality, 3D reconstruction, and virtual tours.
- Development of an interactive application (APP) for mobile devices that allows visitors to enjoy the heritage.
- Production of interactive 4D digital content, multimedia, and augmented reality.
- Carrying out Archaeometry and geophysical survey work at the Roman villa of Pisões, including the creation of 3D models.
- Definition of content suitable for cultural tourism, including accessible texts and graphic and multimedia resources.
- Participation in the definition of relevant archaeological routes and circuits from a tourism perspective.
- Results (implied):
- Improvement of the tourist experience through digital tools accessible on multiple platforms.
- Greater access to culture through immersive experiences and information facilitated by ICT.
- Transfer of scientific knowledge to the community and the business sector, expanding and qualifying the cultural tourism offer.
- Valorization and preservation of archaeological heritage through the use of new technologies in its safeguarding and enhancement.
- Increase in the attractiveness of destinations and contribution to the economic development of low-density territories.
