Summary

At the origin of the Bologna Process an unprecedented political statement was made about the strategic importance of student participation in the governance of higher education systems and institutions. Student participation emerged as one of the principles of the European Higher Education Area, being understood simultaneously as a political objective, a substantial value and a principle of procedure. This was reflected, among others, in the Prague Declarations in 2001, London in 2007 and Yerevan in 2015.

Despite this, student participation is currently far below the desired standards, and the participation of students from underrepresented and disadvantaged groups is almost nonexistent. To promote good governance and inclusion, these challenges need to be addressed immediately at the institutional, national and European level.

In this sense, the general objective of the Student Participation Without Borders (STUPS) project is to define the basis for an European network focused on the development of new practices to foster student participation, as an invaluable source of social innovation, to face the challenges of higher education. Among the specific objectives, there is an increase in knowledge, cooperation, training and awareness around student participation as a driver of more efficient governance and a more inclusive system of higher education and society.

The target groups are students, student leaders and students from underrepresented and disadvantaged groups. Also part of the target groups are university managers with skills in terms of student participation, inclusion and equality.
