Summary

In any architectural intervention, the colour is one a major feature in the selection of a stone. SOLANCIS exports the vast majority of its production namely stone products ready to apply. The variety Extremadura Blue has been especially appreciated by the customers. However, this product has presented two major weaknesses:

1.       1. In the context of the quarry exploitation, the blue colour stones occur among the cream colour ones and it is not possible to understand what are the parameters that conditioned each colour;

2.       2. After application, there are variations in the shades of blue, creating patterns quite anaesthetic and forcing the company to replace several the stone.

These problems have created difficulties to SOLANCIS; in the highly competitive context of supply of these ready to apply products (the most valued in the international markets).

This project intents to:

·        - create liable models that allow us predict the colour of the stone in context of the quarry;

·         - characterize the set of Portuguese Stone Blue in the western region, especially the Extremadura Blue produced by SOLANCIS;

·        - create predictability in the weatherability  of Extremadura Blue after application and propose actions to avoid these undesirable processes.

For the execution of the project the team is led by SOLANCIS and comprises the Portuguese Technological Centre exclusively dedicated to the research and support of the natural stone industry (CEVALOR) and two centres classified by FCT with excellent (Hercules Lab ICT – Earth Sciences Institute). The multidisciplinary of the team and the different standpoints ensure that objectives will be met.

Goals, activities and expected/achieved results

• Compreender que fatores condicionam a variação entre as cores creme e azul dos calcários, no contexto de pedreira;

•   Criar parâmetros e decisão que orientem a exploração da pedreira quando se requere a variedade litológica “Azul Estremadura”;

•    Compreender os fatores decisivos na alteração cromática da pedra “Azul Estremadura” em contexto de obra;

•   Criar parâmetros de utilização certificada da pedra “Azul Estremadura”, considerando as características da rocha e as possíveis utilizações;

•    Criar processos tecnológicos de tratamento da pedra que permitam ampliar a gama de utilizações do “Azul Estremadura”

     Atividades:
