Summary

This project intend to continue the research work that has been developed
in Évora for several years aiming to reconstruct, in a long term
perspective, the whole city welfare and poor relief system, its uses by
the population and its results, the ways in which adaptations and
transformations occurred in more than three centuries, as a study case of
the Portuguese system. It emerges as a direct consequence of the several
previous projects. As four nominative databases were already built – a)
hospital with 90 000 individual records; b) foundling with 20 000
individual records; c) poor buried by the Misericórdia with 8 000
individual records; d) prisoners under the Misericórdia care with 12 181
individual records –, it was considered an absolute priority to
reconstruct the Évora demographic database to be able to link the specific
subpopulations to the general movement of births, marriages and deaths.

Goals, activities and expected/achieved results

1.To complete the Évora demographic database between 1535 and 1800.
2. To contribute to the fulfillment of the ongoing project objectives, and
this way, to be able to evaluate how the health care system evolutes,
analysing the immigration weight and evaluating the social integration or
exclusion measures concerning these migrants.
