In the name of honour: the commissioners for the holy office and the military orders in Portugal (1570-1773)
- Universidade de Évora(líder)
- Universidade Nova de Lisboa - Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas(parceiro)
Summary
The nuclear idea of this project consists in comparing the networks of investigating officers ("comissários"), the activity and the relationship between the two main institutions that investigate the honour in Portugal (the Holy Office and the Court of Orders named "Mesa da Consciência"), at the local level and in the political centre.
The inquiry will consist of knowing who are the investigating officers (including the scribes that went with them) and in which way they registered the parameters of the honour in the first hand and what kind of advantages they tried to extract of this activity both to their careers and social ambitions.Once Castile had similar networks, the project plans to compare what occurred in different points of this territory and Portugal.
The main originality of this project is to jointly study the two institutions that had greater credit in the evaluation of the honour in Portugal and in the rest of the Iberian Peninsula.
