Summary
The understanding of the present-day climate change is strongly connected to the knowledge and understanding of ancient climates. The climatic records collected in the submerged portion of our planet constitute a framework of the Holocene climatic change, fundamental for the interpretation of the climatic records collected on sub-aerial records. In regions without permanent ice sheets the characterisation of ancient climates is done based on stable isotopic data and the pollen and vegetation macro-remains. The most interesting authigenic deposits for this purpose are limestone tuffs and speleothemes.
At Tavira Holocene limestone tuffs were identified and the stable isotopic compositon and the pollen and macro-remains contents will be used as paleoclimatic proxies.
Goals, activities and expected/achieved results
