Summary

With this project we will provide geothermal climate proxies for Mainland Portugal. The study of the variation of the Earth's ground surface temperature (GST) in the past is based on the analysis temperatures obtained in boreholes. This allows reconstructing the climate to non instrumental (paleoclimate). To achieve that goal for Mainland Portugal we will: (1) establish a data base of borehole temperatures suitable for paleoclimatic reconstruction; (2) perform individual and joint inversions of borehole temperatures in order to study the variation of GST in time and space; (3) study the relation between surface air temperature (SAT) and GST (air-ground coupling); (4) study and compare the results of the reconstructions of the climate in the past from borehole temperature data with results of the climate variation from Earth System Models of Intermediate Complexity or even General Circulation Models so they may be used for the calibration of these models.

Goals, activities and expected/achieved results

Goals

1. Setting up an archive of borehole temperatures for paleoclimatic reconstructions for Portugal; 2. Document variation of ground surface temperature (GST) for Portugal; 3. Address the relation between surface air temperature (SAT) and GST; 4. Derive transfer functions for SAT and GST data;5. Study and compare climate reconstructions with results from Regional and General Circulation Models.

Activities

Apresentação de resultados através de: comunicações científicas (previstas 6); artigos científicos (previstos 4); um workshop no final do projecto.Criação de base de dados geotérmicos. Construção de mapas de temperatura do solo.
