Summary

Temporary waters are defined as those that are normally dry, at least during part of the year (summer in the Mediterranean).
Previous studies have focused on the complex interactions between hydrology, ecosystem processes and biodiversity. However, nothing is known about the ecological importance and contribution of plant bound nutrients, especially by leaves fall from riparian vegetation and macrophytes dragged by flood events, to the nutrient enrichment of temporary streams and downstream reservoirs. This proposal is therefore in a position to provide a specific contribution that helps to fill this need, through the experience, outcomes, and knowledge gained in a specific pilot basin (Pardiela Basin in Guadina basin) in which we will integrate all the available information from the last 50 years. Further on, we intend to propose conservative and rehabilitation strategies that support end-users with the provision of more suitable management tools.
