Ecologia Estuarina e Marinha/ Estuarine and Marine Ecology:
- The scientific activity is developed in MARE Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (I&D unit).
http://www.mare-centre.pt.
- The research activities are based on ecology of meiofauna and benthic nematodes assemblages of the estuarine and marine sediments, including the deep sea sediments. The investigation is also focusing on the development of the innovative tools to allow the implementation of the "Marine Strategy Framework Directive" (MSFD) to assess the "Good Quality Status" (GES) related with Descriptor 1- Biodiversity and Descriptor 4- Trophic relations.

Nematodes assemblages are strongly important to investigate and monitoring the coastal and the marine ecosystems:
1-Ecology of deep sea nematodes: Mud Volcanos, Cadiz Gulf and Nazaré Canyon.
2- The functional responses and resilience of seagrass beds after habitat loss and during the natural recovery process: enzymatic activity of the sediments; physiological condition of the plants; macrofauna and meiofauna responses; trophic relations (stable isotopes ecology) and ictiofauna associated responses. An experimental field work to analyse the clam harvesting in natural recovery of seagrass beds was also developed.
3- A combined morphological and molecular analysis of the nematodes assemblages, to provide a tool for fast assessment of the biodiversity and abundance changes to assess GES: dT-RFLP and qPCR
4- The responses of the trophic webs to the presence of a non-indigenous species;

Science communication
Focusing in communication of science to society through project "SOPHIA - Conhecimento para a gestão do ambiente marinho" by participating in training modules offer simultaneously academic qualifications and professional training for the professionals associated to the Public Administration bodies. At the same time, the website is developed with the purpose to provide open access to the knowledge of reference on areas covered related with sea letracy
