Learning Goals

The main goals of this curricular unit are:
- To know the stratigraphy of the Quaternary
- To know in detail the active processes responsible for the Earth’s evolution during this period
- To understand the climate cycles of the Quaternary as well as the forcing mechanisms
- To know the subaerial landscape of this period and the continental sedimentation
- To know the tectonic framework of the Iberian Peninsula and the neotectonics evolution
- To master the tools for the processing and interpretation of data on materials dating and time series of Quaternary processes data
- To know in detail the Hazards of the active processes in Portugal

Teaching Methods

Lectures about the main concepts related to the Quaternary and the more pertinent issues on the active processes with major influence on modern society.
Lab classes aiming the resolution of problems focusing on radiometric dating, time series analysis and interpretation of climate data and quantitative assessment of coastal erosion.
Two day field trip to study coastal processes and continental deposits.
