To integrate public libraries in the creation of the public sphere and in the literacy movement of masses in contemporary times;
Understand the changes occurring in libraries in the context of the electronic revolution and the information society;
Analyze the organizational specificity public library, particularly in terms of human and material resources;
Recognize the importance of management and marketing in the functioning of public libraries;
Understand the challenges that the information society and new technologies pose to libraries in the context of a globalized economy and society.

Contents

1 - The public library concept, objectives and theoretical background. 2 - The public reading in Portugal: from the Public Library of the Royal Court to the National Network of Public Libraries. 3 - The public library and the information society: the challenges of information technology and communication, the computer network of public reading and digital libraries. 4 - Information resources. 5 - Human resources and organization. 6 - The public library services. 7 - Management and Marketing Public Library

Teaching Methods

The methodology focuses on theoretical and practical sessions, with theoretical explanations by the teacher, followed by discussion and questions from students. Will be indicated for basic bibliographic each session. Some of the sessions will be reserved for presentation of research work done by the students. Will be used to e-learning platform for the university to put textbooks and teaching materials, namely, program, bibliography, abstracts, presentations and other classroom resources.
The evaluation will be based on the following criteria and weightings:
a) Oral presentation of a commentary on a text - 30%
b) Comment written to the text (up to 5000 words) - 60%
c) Participation in the debate (10%).
