Learning Goals

The main objective of this course is to provide students with a set of knowledge in the field of Analytical Chemistry. Specifically, it is intended that students understand the fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry, namely the basic principles of analytical methods and techniques, classic or modern, in order to ensure a solid and comprehensive training in this area of Chemistry. Thus, students should understand the fundamentals of classical techniques, such as volumetric analysis, but also the principles of advanced methods like the chromatographic and hyphenated techniques, namely Liquid (LC) and Gas (GC) Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (MS), fundamental for the analysis of diverse compounds with wide application in everyday life. Students must also be able to solve problems related to the theoretical concepts and to develop laboratory projects using the various analytical techniques.

Contents

- Introduction to Analytical Chemistry: types of chemical analysis; quantitative and qualitative analysis; sampling and sample preparation; types of error and statistical analysis of the results.
- Introduction to Volumetric Methods: direct, return and indirect titrations; standards; titration end and equivalence point; classification of volumetric methods.
- Volumetric analysis: precipitation, acid-base, complexation and oxidation-reduction; basic concepts review; titration curves derivation; different types of indicators; application examples.
- Introduction to Chromatographic Methods: theoretical basis of chromatography; classification of chromatographic methods; thin layer chromatography (TLC); column chromatography (CC); high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); gas chromatography (GC); hyphenated techniques, HPLC and GC coupled to mass spectrometry (MS); new developments like metabolomics and proteomics.

Teaching Methods

Interactive teaching methods will be used to teach the syllabus, in addition to e-learning activities and laboratory work, capable of motivating and promoting the individual learning and the critical participation of students in the classroom sessions.
The practical laboratory component of the course is evaluated on a continuous basis, based on the laboratory performance of the students in the laboratory, the preparation of reports and the ability to respond to oral and / or written questions about the work executed.
The theoretical and theoretical-practical components are evaluated individually in two optional modes: continuous assessment (two tests) or the final exam. The final grade will be calculated as follows: 30% for the practical laboratory component and 70% of the grade obtained in the theoretical and theoretical-practical components.
