Presentation

This UC is essentially laboratory in nature, offering the opportunity of developing technical and scientific skills in the field of cell culture, namely, maintenance, manipulation and use of animal cells and tissues in research and biotechnological development.

It is expected that at the end of this course the students have acquired the fundamental knowledge on
animal cell culture, specifically on isolation, culture and handling of animal cells, knowledge on asepsis
and work in a sterile environment and that it provides a development of knowledge of the ethical and

Contents

Cell culture: advantages and limitations.
Type of cell culture: embryonic and adult tissue. Primary or tumor cell culture.
Adherent cell cultures: Epithelium, fibroblasts, neuroendocrine and neuronal cells.
Nonadherent cell cultures: blood cells.
Production and maintenance of cell lines.
Cell culture media composition, supplements, pH buffers, O2, CO2 and saline solutions and indicators; Chemical defined media; Enzymes.
Normal cell culture procedures: separation, purification and identification.
Culture cell lines procedures and preservation methods.
Viability of cells maintained in culture.
Safety aspects of handling cells.
Transfection and hybridome production.
Applications of cell cultures for research purposes (biomedicine and cellular biology) and in biotechnological industry (production of valuable compounds using cell cultures).

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods:
Theoreticals/practicals (12h)
Practicals and Lab work (24h): experiments following a protocol; protocol development by the students; essay and oral presentation development.

Assessment methods:

Evaluation during the semester:
Written exam 30%); Lab skills (20%); Essay in the form of paper or monograph on relevant issues in cell and tissue culture and paper or poster presentation (50%).

Final Exam:
Final written exam (50%); Essay in the form of paper or monograph on relevant issues in cell and tissue culture (30%); Lab skills (20%). This module is essentially practical, elements of the continuous evaluation are maintained.
Total mark between 0-20 points.
